Mytek Brooklyn package review

Posted by Donald Pirie on

This week I received Mytek’s new Brooklyn DAC + and Brooklyn AMP combination.

The Brooklyn DAC + replaces the former Brooklyn DAC. Although the Brooklyn DAC+ looks like its predecessor (Brooklyn DAC) it has been completely redesigned inside.

All changes mentioned below guarantee pristine, transparent and very musical sound:

new state-of-the-art DA chip (Sabre 9028PRO DA) with more filters available

redesigned analogue circuits, separate paths (op-amps, filters etc.) for left and right channel

very transparent analogue attenuator circuit

optimized clock section

upgraded headphone amp

trigger control allows the Brooklyn DAC+ easily to be integrated with other devices

.
I have had the Mytek combo on for a few hours. I have used the combination on a pair of Mauhorn VI cabinets with Lowther DX4 and also a pair of TP1 Imperator cabinets with Lowther PM2A drivers. Both speaker systems are utterly ruthless. I put some well-known tracks on and I can report that I have heard subtleties I have never heard before. I can’t believe it.

This amp is more Class A than the best Class A …..!

Brooklyn AMP definitely opens up after a few hours. It is so smooth you can really open the throttle without fear of any harshness creeping in or of it losing its way – keeps a good grip on the whole range.

I can report there is a distinct difference between analogue and digital volume control on the DAC +. I could never tell on the previous incarnation.

I think the Brooklyn AMP has more presence than the Benchmark AHB2 and is more musical. I don’t think it would be tiring at all on any speaker – bearing in mind I have used it on TP1/PM2A and Mauhorn/DX4 both of which are anything but soft.

I have tested the DAC + and AMP on all formats and particularly on MQA. I have run both FLAC and DSD as native formats and then the same tracks packaged as MQA – no loss whatsoever.

All I can say is that anyone considering anything other than this DAC and this amp is self-evidently suffering from severe mental aberration. Both units are outstanding and would still be outstanding at 4x the price.

Mytek has made a lot of big claims for this small package. Trust me, it is not hype. Both units really do deliver in every respect.
